Malda, 17 November: A tragic incident occurred yesterday afternoon when a small passenger boat capsized in the Ganga River near Manikchak. The boat, carrying around 25 people, overturned due to strong currents and overloading, according to local sources.
Fishermen nearby rushed to the spot and managed to rescue several passengers. The disaster management team and police also arrived quickly and continued the search operation till late evening. So far, most passengers have been rescued, but a few are still reported missing.
Local residents said that the boat was often used by villagers to cross the river for daily work. Authorities have started an investigation to find out whether safety rules were followed.
Officials have urged people to avoid overcrowded boats and to use life jackets during river journeys. The search and rescue operation will continue until all missing persons are found.
