India’s First Underwater Metro Inaugurated in Kolkata
Kolkata has entered a new era of urban transport with the inauguration of India’s first underwater metro. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the historic East–West Metro Corridor on March 6, 2024, connecting Howrah Maidan and Esplanade beneath the Hooghly River.
The underwater section spans 520 metres and forms part of a 4.8 km stretch. The twin tunnels run 13 metres below the riverbed and 30–32 metres beneath the ground, making Howrah the deepest metro station in India. Commuters can now cross the river in just 45 seconds. The tunnel is equipped with advanced safety, ventilation, and emergency systems to ensure secure travel.
The construction faced major challenges due to Kolkata’s soft alluvial soil. Engineers used modern tunnelling techniques to prevent ground subsidence and ensure durability. The project represents a significant achievement in Indian urban infrastructure.
The new metro service is expected to reduce traffic congestion, cut travel time, and provide a pollution-free alternative for daily commuters. It will particularly benefit office-goers, students, and residents traveling between Howrah and central Kolkata. Urban planners also anticipate economic growth and improved connectivity across the city due to this project.
The inauguration of India’s first underwater metro is a landmark achievement, showcasing technological excellence and setting a model for modern urban transport in other Indian cities.
